NASA recognizes Hydrosat’s onboard thermal intelligence concept for advancing adaptive Earth observation with small satellites
[WASHINGTON, D.C. – 02 July, 2026] – Hydrosat, a leading provider of thermal infrared satellite data and AI-powered analytics, today announced that NASA has selected its Hydrosat Onboard Thermal-alert System (HOTS) as a winner of the Space to Soil Challenge. The selection recognizes Hydrosat’s innovative approach to processing thermal intelligence directly onboard small satellites and includes a $100,000 award to support the concept’s continued development.
Led by NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO), the Space to Soil Challenge invited innovators to develop SmallSat mission concepts that combine onboard processing with adaptive sensing to improve regenerative agriculture, forestry, and land resilience. The competition focused on technologies capable of analyzing data within the power, computing, and bandwidth constraints of small satellites, reducing reliance on traditional ground-based processing.
Hydrosat’s HOTS concept enables satellites to evaluate thermal observations as data is collected rather than transmitting all imagery for analysis after acquisition. By identifying environmental and soil stress indicators while still in orbit, the system can prioritize observations, reduce unnecessary data transmission, and deliver information to users more quickly.
The approach builds on Hydrosat’s expertise in calibrated thermal infrared imaging and reflects a broader shift toward more autonomous Earth observation systems capable of responding to changing conditions in near real time.

The award provides Hydrosat with the opportunity to continue developing HOTS with input from NASA and industry experts, helping advance the concept toward operational implementation.
